How Does Rehab Work?

There literally are dozens of philosophies on how to bring about recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. Some of them gain tens of thousands of followers and their reach extends around the world. Others go no farther than one hospital or one rehabilitation facility.

The techniques used are only limited by a person’s imagination of what might help an addicted person turn the corner back to sobriety. There are wilderness programs, an array of drugs that may be administered, group meetings in which some people discuss their past drug or drinking experiences and even programs that offer a hallucinogenic experience to bring about sobriety.

Unfortunately, the majority of people going through all these varied programs do not successfully find recovery. Estimates of success rates vary from 16% to 30%. What actually needs to happen to bring about recovery is to go to work repairing the broken points of a person’s life and building up his (or her) abilities to create a productive, enjoyable life.

So What Points Need to be Repaired?

Most people live with their addictions for several years or longer before they enter rehab for help. By this time, they are buried under a heavy burden of guilt. If they try to get sober, they are not only overwhelmed with cravings, but they receive the full crushing blow of the depression they have been keeping at arm’s length by continuing to abuse drugs or alcohol. Addicts normally feel that the only way they can function is to continue to abuse the drugs they are addicted to. Then they feel euphoric, confident, mellow, sociable, energetic—all things they lose when the drugs wear off.

A person needs to feel relief from the guilt. He needs to feel a return of his self-respect and his personal integrity. He needs to have honest values and be able to live by them. He needs to be able to see the brightness in the world and the best in other people once again. These are all qualities that drug addiction destroys completely.

Building a New Life, Brick by Brick

When a person comes to a Narconon drug rehabilitation center, he or she will find a program that is specifically designed to bring them back to life in just these ways. He will start with a well-supported, drug-free withdrawal step that may be the most tolerable withdrawal he has ever been through. Next, he will undergo Narconon’s New Life Detoxification step to help rid his body of remaining drug residuals, left over from past drug use. He will then begin to learn the simplest basics of dealing with his own life without drugs. He will now have to use his own ability to get through life. This begins by learning the fundamentals of good communication and then practicing his communication skills. This enables a person to start to take back a small measure of control over his life.

But this is only the beginning. Additional life skills course help the person lift himself or herself out of the shambles of an addicted life and into a new life of their own choosing. He relearns integrity, problem solving, even how to choose associates who will support his new sobriety.

For some people, these steps rebuild abilities they lost. Many people, however, began abusing drugs so young that they never developed life skills or maturity. These people may say that they have finally learned how to create a life they can enjoy.

It’s also common for those going through the Narconon program to admit that they can finally leave old frustrations or disappointments behind. They no longer have to cover their fears, pain or anger with drugs.

When rehab addresses the real damage done by addiction and replaces it with a person’s own true ability, that is how rehab should work. And that’s how it does work at a Narconon drug rehab center.  Contact us for more information +45 70606003
