Signs and Symptoms of Rohypnol Use

Rohypnol (generic name: flunitrazepam) is a prescription drug that is prescribed in the UK and Europe for anxiety and sleep problems. In the UK, it is only used by private physicians as the National Health Service no longer recommends its use. It is a strong sedative and is abused for its euphoric and relaxing effects.

However Rohypnol has another, a more sinister use. It is widely known to be used as a date-rape drug. When Rohypnol is given to someone unknowingly, that person may not be able to resist a sexual advance and may not have a memory of the event later. In the countries where Rohypnol is still available, it has been given a blue tint so that it is harder to give it to someone without their knowing. It’s ten times as strong as Valium and falls into the benzodiazepine class.

Signs and Symptoms of Its Abuse

This drug will cause an overall relaxation. A person will feel drowsy, blood pressure will decrease. Muscle tone itself will relax. Memory will be poor, the person may feel dizzy and have headaches. As mentioned, a person may not be able to stop himself or herself from risky or sexual activity. There is likely to be confusion, nightmares and tremors.

If a person mixes this with other drugs that slow down breathing or heart rate, like alcohol, heroin or pain medication, it is easy for an overdose death to occur due to the combined effect of the drugs on the central nervous system. But some people will still mix Rohypnol with alcohol to bring about an exaggerated intoxication; others may mix it with cocaine to reduce their irritability during a long binge of cocaine use.

The Narconon Drug Recovery Program Can Help with Rohypnol Addiction

Like all other benzodiazepines, Rohypnol is addictive. Despite the danger, a person may not be able to stop using this drug when they want to. Narconon programs around the world have had success helping a person recover from addiction to this or other benzodiazepines.

A person who has been addicted to a drug like this has normally suffered harm to personal integrity, perceptions, ability to communicate and moral sense. Each of these areas and others must be repaired for a person to become whole again. The Narconon program walks each person in recovery through a detoxification phase to address old drug toxins that can hold down mood, and then through a series of life skills courses. In each course, a person in recovery learns the fundamentals of living honestly and soberly again, and then goes through a series of practical steps to recover his (or her) ability to build a sober life.
